Alan: Women are caught between an instinctual drive to protect their children while simultaneously needing to protect their own psyches from the psycho-spiritual blowback of doing ANY possible harm -- particularly deliberately "self-chosen" harm -- to their children

They are pronged by the horns of an "impossible" dilemna.

If they vaccinate their kids, they will -- with overwhelming likelihood -- prevent life-threatening communicable disease.

However, since "nothing is perfect," there is also a vanishingly remote possibility that vaccination will cause their kids catastrophic damage or even death.

In this calculus they would rather "risk" their kids' random affliction by preventable disease than live with the harrowing thought that they might be "personally responsible" for "actively" doing something that caused their child's paralysis or death.
