I Would Undergo Deliberate Zika Infection To Accelerate The Creation Of A Vaccine

Dear F,

Thanks for your email.

I would not stand in Danny's way.

However, I would not encourage Maria unless she was confident of rock-solid contraception.

"For most people, the Zika virus causes only a brief, mild flu-like illness, but Zika-related birth defects are an international public health emergency, according to the World Health Organization (WHO)."

In my mind, the opportunity to contribute to a cure -- or to vaccine-prophylaxis -- totally justifies exposure to a "brief, mild flu-like illness" and -- in Maria's case -- deliberate infection would probably make her immune to Zika so that when she does decide to have children she need not worry about microencephaly or other fetal brain damage.

What's not to like?

Plus, I am not a fan of living in fear unless fears are CLEARLY justified.

Trump -- and the whole phenomenon of conservative obstructionism -- would not have happened if right-wingers had not normalized self-terrorization.

Jenny McCarthy: Poster Girl For Self-Terrorization

At its best, America is "the land of the free and the home of the brave."

I perceive the opposite of freedom and bravery every time I see a gringo hunkering down, digging a trench or circling the wagons.

Dear A
Having a virus hang around for 6 months or more is too strange.  Danny falls in the age parameters as does Maria. Would you allow or encourage them to do it?

I would do this.

The fastest way to get a vaccine is by injecting volunteers to better learn how the disease works. By Shannon Palus. zika shot. Not Zika.
