Dear Fred,

I don't understand the conservative obsession with presumed "leveling." (See EK's email below.)

America is an increasingly unequal place with "The 1%" towering over "The (Next) 10%"; "The (Next) 10%" towering over the dwindling middle class; the middle class towering over the working poor; and the working poor towering over the underclass.

By my lights, there is absolutely NO leveling in American society (and if what we see in socialized European states is "leveling," bring it on!).

My working hypothesis is that "too pure principles" make conservatives crazy.
