SNL takes on Obamacare, Ted Cruz, and Breaking Bad

By Ezra Klein, Published: September 29, 2013
Obamacare actually raises an interesting pop-culture question: What will writers do when they can no longer use catastrophic health-care costs as a plot device? Health-care costs are an incredibly common explanation for why good people have to do desperate, even evil, things. They're why Walt begins cooking meth in Breaking Bad. They're why the Sandman turns to crime in Spiderman 3. On a less villainous note, they're why Natalie Portman can't follow Zack Braff to Los Angeles in Garden State. But soon that kind of story is going to make a lot less sense.
