Is our moral compass falling apart? Or, are we becoming more morally attuned?

Dear Fred,

Thanks for your email.

Mostly I agree with you.

But I think there is an emerging consensus on good behavior and that it is significantly less tolerant of prejudice and violence.

Globally, I think Lindsey Graham's "angry white guys" (most of them "good Christians") are the source of disproportionate degradation and violence.

On the other hand, the following statistics are simply eye-popping. http://paxonbothhouses.blogspot.com/2013/02/obama-and-interracial-marriage.html

Then, there's this bullshit. http://paxonbothhouses.blogspot.com/2013/02/training-next-generation-to-believe.html (Capitalism is the world's foremost purveyor of The Seven Deadly Sins. Not one "good American" in a thousand will confess this blindingly obvious truth.)

Girls go to College, Boys go to Prison   -- not a good trend

in addition - sentences are too long, non-violent drug offenders should not be jailed in the first place, and Private Prisons should not be allowed to infect justice with the profit motive.

But I think it's weird that progressives focus on in iniquity of young black men  -- which deserves some attention, but ignores the larger cohort of "young men."

Young men are imprisoned at record rates because they do not know how to behave.

In the 1950s coherent and strong social controls compelled good behavior in young men leading to low crime rates...... The social controls were abandoned in the 1960s and the crime rate soared. Since nobody could agree on what new social controls could be imposed on young men, the alternate solution was installed -- just lock them up.

There is no emerging consensus on what constitutes good behavior in our culture, so we cannot expect any changes.

I think there will always be need to incarcerate a wildly disproportionate number of young bucks.

I also think they've often discharged their aggessivity hormones by age 45 or 50 so that there's little need to keep them penned after this age.

Perhaps those who develope some real, marketable skill while in prison would be first on the early release list.

Progressives focus on race and income, excluding any measure of interest about gender and age.

The prisons are filled with poor young men  --- not women, and not old men, not wealthy people --

The prisons are filled with poor young men way out of their proportions of the population.

Does anybody say that the prison population should reflect the population at large -- with equal amounts male and female serving time -- with lots of older people put to trial and convicted ?

We would need to criminalize certain behaviors in order to achieve this result.

Or, we must accept the fact that certain groups commit more crimes, and therefore they get imprisoned more often.
